My Favourite T-Shirt Style Icons

Some may think that wearing a t-shirt is too casual to classify as ‘style’.  I disagree.  I think a t-shirt worn and styled well is the epitome of effortless chic.  I wrote an earlier post about why a classic white t-shirt is a wardrobe essential.  Now, I’ve chosen a few of my favourite style icons to further illustrate the point.

1. Jane Birkin

There is no doubt of Jane Birkin’s status as a style icon – she does have a Hermes bag named in her honour, after all.  She was a Brit, but also the ultimate inspiration of the classic French laissez-faire elegance.  If anyone made it look effortless, she did.  In the 1960s and 70s, she took the wearing of a simple white t-shirt to another, altogether expert, level.  Today, at the age of 72, she still looks as chic as ever.

2. Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was the queen of the Breton t-shirt.  Stripes were often her go-to look for tees, but she always made the choice look glamorous.  The history of the Breton stripe is an interesting one.  It was first introduced as the French Naval uniform back in 1858, and it had exactly 21 stripes – one for each of Napoleon’s victories.  It was Coco Chanel who took it from workwear to fashion and introduced the marine-themed look in the early 1900s.  But it was icons such as Audrey who took the look to a global stage.

3. Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston is known for her casual t-shirt and jeans style and invariably looks very polished in every combination (white tee, black tee, navy tee – take your pick).  There is a little secret she does have, though, for her t-shirt style.  Several years ago, in an interview, she explained that she has her t-shirts tailored for the perfect fit!  Thus, I don’t think her style can truly qualify as effortless, no matter how chic it is.  And it will probably come as no surprise to you that I don’t think the perfect t-shirt should require any tailoring.  Jennifer, let me introduce you to Loskey…

4. Zoe Kravitz

Last, but certainly not least, is Zoe Kravitz.  In fact, she is my favourite t-shirt style icon of all (you may have noted that she has featured several times on the Loskey Instagram feed!).  Her go-to t-shirt is a crisp, brilliant white, often in a looser boxy cut. Whether paired with jeans, or a slip skirt, the style quotient is always high.  Her look is usually further enhanced with just the right level of chunky gold jewellery.  It is casual chic done oh-so-well.
